{"id":1023,"date":"2017-08-14T15:08:13","date_gmt":"2017-08-14T19:08:13","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/carthe.org\/blog\/?p=1023"},"modified":"2017-08-15T12:00:29","modified_gmt":"2017-08-15T16:00:29","slug":"new-statistical-model-to-aid-in-prediction-of-oil-trash-and-fish-transport","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/carthe.org\/blog\/new-statistical-model-to-aid-in-prediction-of-oil-trash-and-fish-transport\/","title":{"rendered":"New statistical model to aid in prediction of oil, trash, and fish transport"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><b>University of Miami scientists develop new statistical model to aid in prediction of oil, trash, and fish transport<\/b><\/p>\n<p>By Philippe Miron and Laura Bracken<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Offshore oil exploration, oil spill contingency planning, marine debris transport, stock assessment efforts, and fish larval movements are among the many activities that will greatly benefit from a recent study by scientists at the University of Miami\u2019s Rosenstiel School of Marine &amp; Atmospheric Science (UM) looking at ocean currents in the Gulf of Mexico (GoM).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Scientists with the Consortium for Advanced Research on the Transport of Hydrocarbon in the Environment (CARTHE), based at UM, have been actively deploying ocean surface drifters (specialized floats\/buoys that track ocean currents) in the GoM for the past 5 years. These efforts have exponentially increased the data available to the scientific community. Combined with studies from other agencies, the drifter database now contains 3203 trajectories from 1994 to 2016, which cover most of the area of the GoM and the Caribbean Sea (see figure 1). <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It combines GPS-equipped drifters from the following oceanographic expeditions: <\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/carthe.org\/glad\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">GLAD<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (302), <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/carthe.org\/laser\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">LASER<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (1002), and SCULP (523), the NOAA Global Drifter Program (575), the Horizon Marine Inc.\u2019s Eddy Watch program (441), the <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Centro de Investigaci\u00f3n Cient\u00edfica y de Educaci\u00f3n Superior de Ensenada (CICESE)\u2013Petr\u00f3leos Mexicanos (Pemex) Caracterizaci\u00f3n Metoce\u00e1nica del Golfo de M\u00e9xico<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (372), the NOAA\/Atlantic Oceanic and Meteorological Laboratory (AOML) South Florida Program (68), and drifters from the U.S. Coast Guard (30) deployed during LASER. \u00a0This is the largest collection of satellite-tracked drifter trajectory data so far considered. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/carthe.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/Screen-Shot-2017-08-14-at-2.56.27-PM.png\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-1026\" src=\"http:\/\/carthe.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/Screen-Shot-2017-08-14-at-2.56.27-PM.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"832\" height=\"335\" srcset=\"http:\/\/carthe.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/Screen-Shot-2017-08-14-at-2.56.27-PM.png 832w, http:\/\/carthe.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/Screen-Shot-2017-08-14-at-2.56.27-PM-300x121.png 300w, http:\/\/carthe.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/Screen-Shot-2017-08-14-at-2.56.27-PM-768x309.png 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 832px) 100vw, 832px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Figure 1:<\/span><\/i> <i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">On the left, a spaghetti plot of all daily satellite-tracked drifter trajectories describing the surface-ocean Lagrangian dynamics in the extended Gulf of Mexico. On the right, the number of drifters per grid bin independent of the day.<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Using short-run trajectories from this large collection of satellite-tracked drifters, the researchers constructed a matrix of transitional probabilities of moving from one location to another inside the GoM. \u00a0How likely is a particle to move from one block to the adjacent block? This leads to a <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Markov-chain model<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> &#8211; a model using only current observations to predict future events &#8211; of the surface ocean dynamics in the GoM that can be used to investigate long-term behavior in a statistical sense. For example, if you have an oil spill at a certain location today, the model will tell where the oil will tend to accumulate most.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As a result of their analysis, they have identified regions in the GoM (see figure 2) where tracers such as oil, plastic debris, plankton, and even fish larvae are attracted to and remain in for extended periods of time as well as the regions where those tracers originate from (i.e., their basins of attraction). This approach to ocean connectivity is conceptually very different from the traditional approach, which is based on a hypothesis, then splitting the domain and evaluating interconnections between the regions. The new model allows the scientists to extract the attraction zones and their basins of attraction that constrain the connectivity. The robustness of those provinces is highlighted in figure 3. The first row presents a tracer evolution from both sides of the main separation, the blue portion is evacuated outside of the GoM via the Loop Current while the red portion slowly converged to the western coast, similarly to the path of a Loop Current Eddy. The second and third row show tracer evolution starting inside and outside two of the refined regions, respectively the north and south West Florida Shelf.
