Planning and Preparing"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"color: #00253e;\"><strong>SCOPE = Surfzone Coastal Oil Pathways Experiment<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"color: #00253e;\">A\u00a0group of researchers within CARTHE are preparing for\u00a0a nearshore field experiment,\u00a0which will\u00a0describe the cross-shore exchange of material between the inner shelf and the surf zone. \u00a0How do oil and other toxins move from the Gulf of Mexico onto the beaches of Alabama, Florida, Louisiana, Mississippi and Texas?<\/p>\n<p style=\"color: #00253e;\">Dr. Ad Reniers at the University of Miami\u2019s Rosenstiel School of Marine and Atmospheric Science (RSMAS) and Dr. Jamie MacMahan at the Naval Postgraduate School are\u00a0the lead scientists conducting this experiment scheduled for\u00a0December 2013, at John Beasley Park, Okaloosa Island, FL.<\/p>\n<p style=\"color: #00253e;\">A large scale experiment of this kind requires a great deal of planning to prepare all of the equipment that will be used in the field. \u00a0We have spent the last few months acquiring the necessary permits,\u00a0designing and building drifters, acquiring SPOT satellite contracts for the GPS units which will be attached to our drifters, and coordinating the team and equipment. \u00a0In order to collect as much data as possible in this 3 week long scheduled experiment, we plan to use many\u00a0different tools:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"color: #00253e;\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-112 img-responsive\" src=\"http:\/\/carthe.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/06\/Screen-Shot-2014-06-23-at-4.26.22-PM-300x231.png\" alt=\"Screen Shot 2014-06-23 at 4.26.22 PM\" width=\"300\" height=\"231\" srcset=\"http:\/\/carthe.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/06\/Screen-Shot-2014-06-23-at-4.26.22-PM-300x231.png 300w, http:\/\/carthe.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/06\/Screen-Shot-2014-06-23-at-4.26.22-PM.png 343w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/>200+ GPS equipped drifters (including 6 designed and built by Florida<\/span>\u00a0High School\u00a0students) that will float along with the currents<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Dye experiments &#8211;
