{"id":148,"date":"2013-12-08T17:47:39","date_gmt":"2013-12-08T22:47:39","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/carthe.org\/blog\/?p=148"},"modified":"2014-06-26T12:58:08","modified_gmt":"2014-06-26T16:58:08","slug":"scope-ebb-drifter-deployment-take-2-high-school-drifters-released","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/carthe.org\/blog\/scope-ebb-drifter-deployment-take-2-high-school-drifters-released\/","title":{"rendered":"SCOPE &#8211; Ebb Drifter Deployment #2 &#038; High School drifters released!"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Today was a busy\u00a0day!<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #444444;\">We did the second Ebb drifter deployment, this time\u00a0with different wind conditions. \u00a0We also did a bathymetric survey off of Beasley Park and did a walking surfzone beach survey.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-153 img-responsive\" src=\"http:\/\/carthe.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/12\/IMG_3229-266x300.jpg\" alt=\"IMG_3229\" width=\"266\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"http:\/\/carthe.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/12\/IMG_3229-266x300.jpg 266w, http:\/\/carthe.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/12\/IMG_3229-911x1024.jpg 911w, http:\/\/carthe.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/12\/IMG_3229.jpg 1686w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 266px) 100vw, 266px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>But the best part of the day was deploying the new drifters specially designed by Florida high school students from MAST Academy, South Broward High School, and <span style=\"color: #00253e;\">Rickards High School<\/span>. <span style=\"color: #00253e;\">Drifters are important pieces of equipment that float along with the ocean currents and provide data on their location and speed to scientists via GPS units. \u00a0In this coastal experiment, the CARTHE scientists want to know how the currents and waves affect the movement of oil and other toxins onto shore. \u00a0These students were challenged to create new and improved drifters that can help scientists answer these tough but important questions. \u00a0The best drifters from each school were released today and will help add to the wide array of data we are collecting. \u00a0This is an important piece of this large puzzle.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #444444;\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"img-responsive alignleft wp-image-149 size-medium\" src=\"http:\/\/carthe.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/06\/dye-screws-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"dye screws\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" srcset=\"http:\/\/carthe.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/06\/dye-screws-300x225.jpg 300w, http:\/\/carthe.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/06\/dye-screws-1024x768.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/>There is no rest for the weary. \u00a0Tonight we must prepare for the surfzone dye experiment. Dye sensors placed on large trailer screws will be deployed in the alongshore to measure the alongshore dye dispersion and cross-shore dilution.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Today was a busy\u00a0day!
