Exercises such as this one are designed to improve communication, planning and emergency response proficiency across multiple local, state and federal agencies, universities and private companies, in the event of an oil or fuel spill in any navigable waterway, like Bear Cut. This exercise was\u00a0an excellent opportunity for numerous agencies and organizations to gather and practice working together in a unified command setting.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><a href=\"http:\/\/carthe.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/12\/12309612_990947924284815_2569730152526009665_o.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-440 img-responsive\" src=\"http:\/\/carthe.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/12\/12309612_990947924284815_2569730152526009665_o-300x200.jpg\" alt=\"12309612_990947924284815_2569730152526009665_o\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" srcset=\"http:\/\/carthe.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/12\/12309612_990947924284815_2569730152526009665_o-300x200.jpg 300w, http:\/\/carthe.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/12\/12309612_990947924284815_2569730152526009665_o-1024x683.jpg 1024w, http:\/\/carthe.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/12\/12309612_990947924284815_2569730152526009665_o.jpg 2048w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/>\u00a0<\/a>CARTHE provided scientific support for this\u00a0well organized environmental safety exercise. \u00a0We gradually released five of our latest GPS-equipped drifters from the R\/V Walton Smith at the University of Miami Rosenstiel School of Marine &amp; Atmospheric Science. Every 30 minutes we deployed 1 drifter into Bear Cut. \u00a0The first at 9:20am when the mock\u00a0&#8220;fuel spill&#8221; occurred (also low tide) and the last one at 11:20am.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><a href=\"http:\/\/carthe.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/12\/IMG_8477.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-439 img-responsive\" src=\"http:\/\/carthe.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/12\/IMG_8477-225x300.jpg\" alt=\"IMG_8477\" width=\"225\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"http:\/\/carthe.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/12\/IMG_8477-225x300.jpg 225w, http:\/\/carthe.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/12\/IMG_8477-768x1024.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 225px) 100vw, 225px\" \/><\/a>The drifters slowly drifted west into Biscayne Bay (much slower than expected based on average daily observations),\u00a0going only about\u00a01.5 km from the release location,\u00a0implying that the &#8220;spill&#8221; did not spread too far. \u00a0However,\u00a0the tide reversed after around 3 pm and all the drifters turned, left Biscayne Bay, went under the Bear Cut bridge and exited to the Atlantic side.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><a href=\"http:\/\/carthe.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/12\/12314514_991142044265403_3567145860056341654_o-1.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-442 img-responsive\" src=\"http:\/\/carthe.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/12\/12314514_991142044265403_3567145860056341654_o-1-1024x745.jpg\" alt=\"12314514_991142044265403_3567145860056341654_o (1)\" width=\"720\" height=\"524\" srcset=\"http:\/\/carthe.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/12\/12314514_991142044265403_3567145860056341654_o-1-1024x745.jpg 1024w, http:\/\/carthe.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/12\/12314514_991142044265403_3567145860056341654_o-1-300x218.jpg 300w, http:\/\/carthe.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/12\/12314514_991142044265403_3567145860056341654_o-1.jpg 2048w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 720px) 100vw, 720px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">The tide reversed again after 9 pm and 3 out of the 5 drifters entered the Bay across\u00a0Bear Cut and RSMAS, while the other two remained outside.
