{"id":576,"date":"2016-01-25T10:40:03","date_gmt":"2016-01-25T15:40:03","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/carthe.org\/blog\/?p=576"},"modified":"2016-04-20T11:01:42","modified_gmt":"2016-04-20T15:01:42","slug":"anglers-please-leave-drifters-in-the-water","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/carthe.org\/blog\/anglers-please-leave-drifters-in-the-water\/","title":{"rendered":"Anglers: Please leave drifters in the water"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-577 img-responsive\" src=\"http:\/\/carthe.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/01\/Screen-Shot-2016-01-21-at-4.45.06-PM-225x300.png\" alt=\"Screen Shot 2016-01-21 at 4.45.06 PM\" width=\"225\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"http:\/\/carthe.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/01\/Screen-Shot-2016-01-21-at-4.45.06-PM-225x300.png 225w, http:\/\/carthe.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/01\/Screen-Shot-2016-01-21-at-4.45.06-PM.png 387w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 225px) 100vw, 225px\" \/>Scientists with the\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/carthe.org\/\">Consortium for Advanced Research on Transport of Hydrocarbon in the Environment\u00a0<\/a>(CARTHE) are currently (Jan 15-Feb 15, 2016) conducting an experiment in the northern Gulf of Mexico\u00a0using biodegradable, surface drifters\/buoys. \u00a0<strong>If you see these,\u00a0please leave them in the water.<\/strong> \u00a0They are designed to drift with the ocean currents for several months so the researchers can learn more about the currents in the Gulf of Mexico. \u00a0The data will then be put into computer models in an effort to better understand how the currents in this area form and how they transport oil, other pollutants, fish, and even people lost at sea.<\/p>\n<p>The LAgrangian Submesoscale ExpeRiment (LASER) is the third CARTHE experiment since 2012, as well as the largest, featuring 2 research vessels, 3 planes, 1000 biodegradable drifters, 10,000 biodegradable drift cards, and a variety of sensors.
