{"id":972,"date":"2017-06-23T10:27:31","date_gmt":"2017-06-23T14:27:31","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/carthe.org\/blog\/?p=972"},"modified":"2017-07-05T13:28:42","modified_gmt":"2017-07-05T17:28:42","slug":"carthe-drifters-track-miami-sewage-leak","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/carthe.org\/blog\/carthe-drifters-track-miami-sewage-leak\/","title":{"rendered":"CARTHE drifters track Miami sewage leak"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>On Tuesday, June 20, 2017, a 63 inch sewage pipe broke and began leaking into the Biscayne Canal, according to a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.miamidade.gov\/releases\/2017-06-20-wasd-sewer-spill.asp\">No Contact with Water advisory<\/a> issued by Miami Dade County. \u00a0This public advisory is to not have contact with water within Biscayne Canal \/ C-8\u00a0 from 27th Avenue to the Bay and the Biscayne Bay West of the Intracoastal Waterway from Broad Causeway to 79th Street Causeway including Pelican Harbor Marina, as well as the Biscayne Aquatic Park.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/carthe.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/DCyxN6XUMAAhS3g.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-978\" src=\"http:\/\/carthe.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/DCyxN6XUMAAhS3g.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1005\" height=\"593\" srcset=\"http:\/\/carthe.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/DCyxN6XUMAAhS3g.jpg 1005w, http:\/\/carthe.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/DCyxN6XUMAAhS3g-300x177.jpg 300w, http:\/\/carthe.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/DCyxN6XUMAAhS3g-768x453.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1005px) 100vw, 1005px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/carthe.org\">CARTHE<\/a>, an ocean currents research consortium based at the <a href=\"http:\/\/rsmas.miami.edu\">University of Miami RSMAS<\/a>, is equipped to respond quickly to oil spills and other pollution events with the goal of tracking the ocean currents that transport the pollutant and predicting its fate. Once we learned of the local sewage spill, CARTHE\u00a0quickly supplied Miami Dade County&#8217;s Department of Environmental Resource Management (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.miamidade.gov\/environment\/\">DERM<\/a>) with 3 GPS-equipped, biodegradable drifters that are specially designed to track the flow of ocean currents. DERM released the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pacificgyre.com\/carthe-drifter.aspx\">CARTHE drifters <\/a>into the Biscayne Canal near the mouth of the Bay on Thursday morning.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_981\" style=\"width: 899px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/carthe.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/drifter-sewage-canal-2.jpg\"><img aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-981\" decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-image-981 size-full\" src=\"http:\/\/carthe.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/drifter-sewage-canal-2.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"889\" height=\"500\" srcset=\"http:\/\/carthe.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/drifter-sewage-canal-2.jpg 889w, http:\/\/carthe.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/drifter-sewage-canal-2-300x169.jpg 300w, http:\/\/carthe.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/drifter-sewage-canal-2-768x432.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 889px) 100vw, 889px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-981\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Photo credit: Chris Avila\/DERM &#8211; Inset: Cedric Guigand\/CARTHE<\/p><\/div>\n<p>The three CARTHE drifters exited the canal, initially moving north in Biscayne Bay but turning south due to the change of tides. \u00a0They hugged the coast, making contact with land between NE 89 St and NE 93 St, before turning back north again Friday morning. \u00a0The tracks to date have aligned with the advisory area issued by the County.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/carthe.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/Screen-Shot-2017-06-23-at-9.17.50-AM.png\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-982\" src=\"http:\/\/carthe.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/Screen-Shot-2017-06-23-at-9.17.50-AM.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"978\" height=\"930\" srcset=\"http:\/\/carthe.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/Screen-Shot-2017-06-23-at-9.17.50-AM.png 978w, http:\/\/carthe.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/Screen-Shot-2017-06-23-at-9.17.50-AM-300x285.png 300w, http:\/\/carthe.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/Screen-Shot-2017-06-23-at-9.17.50-AM-768x730.png 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 978px) 100vw, 978px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>DERM will continue to test the area for contamination as a precaution but says that their samples have come back clean. CARTHE will continue to work with DERM to monitor the real time movement of the drifters in an effort to confirm the effected area. \u00a0We will update the track as the drifters move.
