Painting with a Purpose

IMG_8663Middle and high school students from across South Florida have spend weeks learning about CARTHE, our previous research efforts, and our plans for LASER (LAgrangian Submesoscale ExpeRiment), and volunteered to help with the preparations for this enormous experiment.

Almost 1000 students from 10 schools are painting drift cards (aka biodegradable, bamboo dinner plates).  CARTHE plans to release 10,000 drift cards into the Gulf of Mexico and track them with the aerostat (aerial photography system discussed in a previous post).  In order to track an individual plate/card, it helps if it is uniquely painted in bright colors.IMG_4838

By the end of December 2015, local students will have painted approximately 3000 drift cards for the largest oceanography experiment of its kind – LASER!  Thank you so much to all of the students and teachers who helped CARTHE prepare the equipment for this exciting effort.
